Equipment Malfunction Leads to Major Sewer Overflow

SAWS crews cleaning up sewer spill on the Edwards Aquifer contributing zone.

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio Water System crews are cleaning up after a major sewer
overflow in far northwest San Antonio, near I-10 and Boerne Stage Road. An equipment malfunction at a
lift station caused wastewater to overflow into a nearby dry creekbed. The amount of the overflow is
undetermined, but is estimated to be approximately 400,000 gallons.

SAWS crews first discovered the overflow on Wednesday afternoon, and crews are onsite
    cleaning up the area.

SAWS is notifying the appropriate governmental agencies, and will continue clean-up and
monitoring efforts. There is no adverse affect to the public drinking water supply. SAWS will identify private well owners near the overflow site, and notify them about the event as well.

Since 1992, San Antonio Water System has provided leadership in managing and developing water resources in the San Antonio region. Water and wastewater services are provided to more than 1 million consumers in the San Antonio area. For more information, visit www.saws.org.

Grease and Debris in Apartment Sewer Line Cause Major Overflow
SAWS crews cleaning up sewer spill on sensitive recharge zone.

SAN ANTONIO – SAWS crews are cleaning a major sewer spill in an area northeast of the intersection of I-10 and Loop 1604 in far north San Antonio. An 8-inch private sewer line running from the Haven at the Rim apartment complex overflowed, spilling about 120 to 130 thousand gallons into a nearby creekbed just south of the Rim shopping center.

SAWS crews first responded to notice of the spill at 2pm Thursday, and discovered a line blockage that was composed of grease and rags.

While this is a private lateral, and not part of the public sewer system, SAWS immediately began clean-up operations. SAWS has notified the appropriate water agencies, and will continue clean-up efforts. There are currently no known impacts to the public drinking water supply.

Since 1992, San Antonio Water System has provided leadership in managing and developing water resources in the San Antonio region. Water and wastewater services are provided to more than 1 million consumers in the San Antonio area. For more information, visit www.saws.org.
